Welcome to the RSPB Communities Christmas Advent calendar! Rather than chocolates (sorry), with each day that leads up to the big day, why not open a virtual Advent calendar window and reveal a teaser for you to ponder or post a picture. There is no right or wrong answer, the answers will simply be what you want to appear in that window. It’s Christmas, so let’s have some fun!Claire
There are so many yet to see, but birds of prey would have to come pretty high on my list, I only have to see a buzzard to grin like an idiot in the middle of nowhere.
Lot to learn
There's nothing idiotic about grinning at a buzzard.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Glad you agree Clare, now if I ever got to see a Golden Eagle.......
I'm pretty laid back about specific birds, I don't mind what shows up when I'm out & about. I'm happier being pleasantly surprised if something unusual appears - better than being disappointed about missing something I'd made a special trip to see. So I'd been in Norfolk nearly the whole week before getting round to finding the Grey Phalarope
Wren - hang around in Bittern Hide more at Minsmere - this fella's been really regular recently :-)
Since Ptamigan has been mentioned, this photo was another example of the same principle. Complete luck, didn't go looking for it - but the discovery made the day :-)

Great news but not everyone appreciates it.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
I still yearn for another opportunity to take pics of Green Woodpecker just like the ones I missed earlier in the year when that one was clinging to a telegraph pole about four foot up & not more than four/five foot away & playing peek a boo...I was in my car & my cam was at home!!!
Lovely clear pics WJ!

Fabulous photos Joe and I agree with what you say there - if something turns up unexpectedly you get such a thrill when you spot it!
Wendy - as you know I'm with you on the green woodpecker photo opp! That moment must have been so frustrating for you! Hope you get another chance before two long, though don't hold your breath - Ilve been waiting two years now!!!! Am sure you will be luckier than me though lol!
