Moderators poll - how are we doing?

A brave move, maybe, but we do listen to feedback and we want to know if you are happy with our current approach or if you think we need to be doing more on the communities. We've learned by now that whatever we do we cannot please everyone but we hope to be helping towards making this a fun and informative place to be.

I've selected a few options in the poll, please answer the most appropriate, again if more than one seem appropriate please add that in a comment or if you have any more constructive comments please share them. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the honest and helpful feedback TJ and I quite agree, we do need to look at making this site more user friendly, I think 'how to' guides were mentioned, i'll chase that up. Looks like I've got a link to fix!

  • Hi TeeJay,

Many Thanks for your comments regarding my photos, really appreciate it! Our Rainham reserve is definitely a great place to see Water Voles, I personally have always found Spring to be the best time as the vegetation has not grown making it far easier to see them.

Saying that, Water Voles are quite active all year round and between now and say November adults and this years young will be out and about so now is a good time too and as winter goes on and vegetation dies back.

    Good Luck!

I've noticed that Nicola_volunteer of the Old Moor (Dearne Valley) Group has produced an Help file because members of the Group were confused about how to do things. I think this is a good initiative but is this ad hoc approach the best way forward? I think it emphasises the need for a proper "Help/How To" section to be built in to the forum for the benefit of all users.

Her post can be seen here.

  • While I think it is great that people take the time and effort to do a "how to" page surely a forum that is open to Joe Public should not need that otherwise users could be over faced before they start

I have advocated the use of mousover and dropdowns which would he;p newcomers out a little mor - fairly easy to implement i would have thought, but had no feedback as yet.

Am I dreaming this, or did we have drop downs as suggested by Bob when the last upgrade was done, but there were a lot of complaints about it at the time so they were removed?

    Cheers, Linda.

  • One little flaw in your design, Bob, is you have forgotten Homes for Wildlife, which inexplicably is found on the Wildlife Home Page under Groups.

As Homes for Wildlife contains the forum for Wildlife in the Garden (one of the most popular forums) it really should not be hidden where no-one can find it. I'm not at all surprised you missed it in your example. Most people do.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Yes, Linda is right we did have a sort of half baked drop down menu. From my recollection it was only implemented on one or two of the headings and it was never fully implemented. I think you had to click on the heading before the drop down menu appeared. A lot of modern websites have this mouse over hover system that Bob is advocating. I think this would largely solve the navigation problem if it's implemented well. However, it wouldn't solve the isssue of how to perform things - like posting photos, videos etc - for which I think you need a help file.

Not sure what your point about Joe Public is, Seaman. Casual viewers don't have access to these facilities unless they are members of the Community.

  • Well mods I consider you are doing very well, however the big problem must be the site losing valuable members ref Seymoure.Fact is we just cannot afford to lose valuable professional people who have the knowledge that us amateurs at times need.Feel sure he regrets losing it a quite badly and has apologised so think it would be a nice gesture if you said to him that you hope he looks in occasionally and if the forum gets sorted out he comes back.

    Surely his frustration is understandable.

  • Hi sooty, have seen seymour's post and have commented, I do hope he will reconsider I really do. Of course, I understand his and others frustration.... Us mods/techs are feeling it too :)
