Good morning from 'down under'.

The sun is shining and the birds are chirping on another beautiful mid-summer day.  I have been looking at the site daily for the last few weeks, while recovering from an operation.  The good life is all about to change as I return to work this week, so my comments on your photos may slow down.  I have loved the discussion during the last few weeks about what the birds are eating, or not, during your harsh winter.  We have had a few very hot days so I have been keeping the waterlevels high in the bird bath.  I love to see the smaller birds splashing around in the saucers at the bottom of my pot plants on the balcony!

I have been so inspired by the bird knowledge shown by many of the bloggers that I got out my old bird book and went back through the digital photo albums and began to identify as many of the birds as possible. We have a lovely family of 'terns' who live nearby during the summer months and I am happy to say they are 'crested terns'!  Purely an amateur but having lots of fun! Lovely to see the comments and welcoming wishes to all of the new users on the blog too!

I must admit I cant wait to get back to the UK and up to Loch Garten especially, but it all seems to be a bit far into the future at the moment.

Cheers,

Jude.

  • Hello Jude, so glad you are now recovered from your operation, but it seems a shame that you have to return to work when you are enjoying your summer. Hope we still see you on the site as often as you can. Take care.

  • Hello Jude, good to "meet" you. I am glad you have been enjoying the forum while recovering from your operation and hope that you will still find time to look in when the dreaded work beckons again.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hey Jude...............Seems like a good start to a song that does:)  Anyway, great to hear from you.  Saw online that some places in Aus were having 35 degrees of heat at night time for a while, thats rather hot methinks!!

  • Hello Jude,

    Pleased to meet you.

What sort of birds do you get on your balcony?

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi Jude,

you must see lots of colourful and wonderful birds where you live, birds some of us will never see in the wild.

Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!

  • Hello Jude, Welcome to the forum

I am glad you have been enjoying the forum while recovering from your operation and hope that you will still find time to look in when your work begins again.

yes the hottest night recorded in Victoria since about 1902!  Fortunately the hot weather has eased off down in the south of the state, where  we live.  Still hottish up on the northern border though.  School is about to resume for the new year - so its a given that we will hit the hot weather again!

    cheers, jude.

Birds here at this house are pretty common: sparrows, swallows, noisy myna birds, willy wagtails, honey eaters.  There is a family of magpies with three babies who are learning to sing.  Your English magpies are much prettier birds but our magpies warble and sing wonderfully.  We occassionally get magpie larks too.  As the weather has heated up the myna birds have been chasing everything else away from the birdbath! My daughter has threatened to buy a water pistol to chase them away! We get a beautiful parrot in a big tree next door- I have been trying to get a photo to post- but nothing good enough yet.  We have also had a family of striated pardalotes visiting too.  Most of the birds love to fly in of an evening and eat the insects in and around my tomato plant!

Hi Janet.  The colourful birds tend to be further away in the bush; we live in a busy seaside town.  I have posted a few photos of some of the most colourful birds visiting our bush garden; they are listed under "Australian".

    cheers
