Hi, so i've been birdwatching recently and i've been thinking to put up a few bird feeders. I don't really want to buy cheap ones as they look pretty flimsy and won't last long, so i've read pinecones are alright? But anyways, I live in a townhouse with a paved backyard. There are trees in neighbouring backyards(I've never seen any birds in them, though.) and out in the front(There are a few). I want to try and attract birds to my backyard, but i've read that paved backyards don't really get much attention, and the trees in the front are too high to hang something up. What do you guys suggest?
I have a paved outside area, and I have attracted a lot of birds.
When you put out food, allow 2-4 weeks for the birds to discover the food, also a bird bath would attract birds too.
When putting out food make sure the food is not accessible to mice/rats/squrrrels.
That's probably a good idea. The only thing concerning me is that there are no birds around my backyard in general...
You need to do a bit of research in to which birds are likely to be in your area. It's no use putting food out for a species that won't be within 100 miles of where you are. As Yulia says, you will need patience. Could you put potted plants/shrubs/trees in your yard, as potential perches?
There is a public bird feeder and I put some raw sunflower seeds in yesterday. This morning I checked, and they were all gone. I live in Ontario, and i've read that typically the birds in my area like them? So food choice isn't a problem. As for plants, I do have a young apricot tree in my yard, but it's only about as tall as my backyard fence.
Sunflower hearts are pretty popular with most common species - at least here in the UK they are. You could try a pole bird feeder which has hanging hooks and trays etc attached to it and they're not too expensive. I use a metal parasol base to support mine on my paved area. In the evening I sweep up any dropped food that the ground feeders haven't eaten, just to make sure it doesn't attract rodents.
Hm, that might be a good idea.
