Sweet chestnut tree series of pecked holes in straight lines?

Have found a few sweet chestnut trees in a woodland near me with these markings on them. Some lines of holes go all the way up the trunk. When I looked it up it suggested they could have been caused by a sapsucker woodpecker, but as I understand it these are a rare migrant in this country. Does anyone know what else could have caused them?

Thank you!
