Bird identification

Is anybody able to identify the bird on the left in the photo please? It was in the garden with pheasants which leads me to believe that that is what it is and it’s a similar size but although it appears to have very faint pheasant details it’s black. Thank you

  • It certainly looks like a pheasant - the beak is identical to the other two. I'm going to assume it's a melanistic pheasant, meaning that instead of its normal colouring something in its genes has caused only dark colours to come through.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
