Problems with binoculars

hi there

I have 2 pairs of RSPB Viking binoculars.  Dave has one pair, and I have the other pair due to our differing eye sight.

I have had my binoculars for over 2 years now,   They where bought at the Bird Fair 2-3 years ago.

While on holiday in Spain last year, the button which is used to focus the bins has detached itself (the plastic covering that is).  I am sure that the heat/hot weather contributed towards the plastic deteriotating as it did.

Is there an easy way to repair the binoculars, and to prevent this happening again.

I am going to Spain this year and hopefully the binoculars remain in one whole piece this time.

Anyone has similar problems

  • Hi Kathy,

I'm sure the bins should last longer than two years, they are probably guaranteed for longer than that.  Any chance you could send them back for repair or replacement?  I have never been to a Birdfair so I do not know how these work but I guess you ought to be able to obtain a list of the people who exhibit there and work out who you bought them from.  Other than that maybe a local optics retailer might be able to tell you how to fix them. Then again, how about emailing Viking to make enquiries.  I have some Viking bins which I bought in the autumn and if they fall apart they are going straight back.  Hope you manage to fix them.

    Regards

  • Hi Kathy, I agree with SB. As long as you have always looked after your bins. there is no reason why they should fall apart. You should check how long your guarantee is for, but of course you have wasted some time now, since the cap fell off. Get in touch with Viking, or failing that, as SB says you must have a local man, who will advise you.

    Hi Lori/Brenda

    Thank you for your answer {s}

I thought that bins as good as Viking would last for more than 2 years.  I do have the receipt still so that is a blessing.  Dave and I look after our optic stuff as it is very expensive for any breakages to occur.

Lori: The famous bird Fair is on once a year at Rutland Water.  It is a well loved yearly event for birders in the UK and abroad.  Well worth a visit by the way when it is on once more.

They have a large area of the event designed for the sale of optics, and you also have a chance to try before you buy.  We have bought tripods, and various bits and pieces each year.

I think I will e-mail Viking (send the same photos to them) and see what they have to say about the subject.

    Will let you know.

    Regards

    Hi,

it looks as though the rubber cover  has stretched and come off the focus wheel . If the rubber cover is undamaged it should be easy to slide it back on and re-attach it to the steel of the focus wheel with suitable adhesive / double sided carpet tape.

Any decent optics repairer should fix it.... HOWEVER   If you ring Viking they should be able to fix it for you. It will be a test of their customer service :)  I know other optics manufacturers would do it with no problem.:)

  • Hi Linda

I agree with seymour, it should be easy enough to stick back on. If you have no joy with Viking, let me know and I will recommend a good adhesive for you.

I restore ceramics and glass so I have plenty of choices.

    Best wishes Chris

  • seymouraves - what would we do without you? ;-)

Kathy, I'm so pleased you still have your receipt.  Good luck with getting them fixed and I will be interested to hear what Viking have say.
