One minor annoyance that I have with the site is that the default action for links especially those added to posts by forum members .
This is set to open the linked page in the current active window, meaning that the original page is replaced.
The issue with this is that if you then follow other links etc it can mean having to use the back buttont to get back to the original discussion, which breaks the train of thought.
In these days of Multi-tabbed browser this is not considered best practice.
With the upcoming software upgrade would it be possible to change the default to "open in new window" (this will be handled by the browswer to open a tab/window as per user preference.
When using the link button there is a dialogue box that gives the option to set this but it defaults to Open in same window and the pasted links which are automatically parsed by the forum software always do this
Sorry for long post but wanted to fully explain - this option should be an option of the software as other forums I moderate on have the "correct" set-up
Best regardsNigel

yes yes yes yes YES!!
as you can gather this gets a big +1 from me! :)
all the other forums I am on have links opening in a new window and I am surprised how many times I will follow a link, close it out of habit... and the wonder where on earth the RSPB forum has got to!!
you will notice that ALL links that I have included on my posts default to open in a new browser window :)

Hi Guy,
Thanks for the support on this,
I Mod on a few large, (100000+), members forums and thus often have multiple windows open so often have the same issue - hence the request ;)
Hi barman
I'm using Mozilla Firefox browser, and there is no default selected.
The Insert/Edit link box comes up with two options.
I always select the 'Open link in a New window' option.
Which browser are you using that selects 'Same window' as it's default?
Best wishes Chris

To add to what Chris is saying with Firefox, instead of clicking link with the left button use the right and opt for open in new tab.

i have started doing this in Chrome... just open in new window using shift button and click :)
I use IE8 and also get the option whether to have a new window or not.
Cheers, Linda.

thats the issue... not everyone selects 'open link in new window' so the default 'open link in same window' is selected if the poster does not select an option.
the trend on most forums is to have links open in new windows... this also benefits the 'host' site as users will stay on it for longer
If I can just Clarify ....
My issue with this is not that there is not a workaround - once the links are set, I always use Middle-Click to open links (when I remember).
My issue is that if you Copy and paste a link into a post the default is to open that link in the same window, also if you use the insert link button, this also has a default of open in same window (or not Set, which is the same result).
Taking the casual guest user away from this site can have the result of the user not returning, but just "clicking through" the site. This is not a good idea,
Although as I stated in my original post that I find this a minor annoyance at times, which Often leads me to open another window onto the site manually, it is not a deal breaker ;)
