We are currently enjoying the antics of a young moorhen which has clearly been blown off track in our semi-urban garden. It seems to be coping ok by using our next door neighbours pond and coming into our garden to pinch bird seed I put down on the decking for our many other visitors! (see pic). But I am worried about how long it will last without being with other moorhens and in a more natural environment? Do you think it will make its own way back to where it came from or should we try and catch it and take it back to our nearest nature reserve a few miles away?
Dont worry it will find its way back, and its not un-common to see them well away from water. to try and catch it would be contravening the wildlife and countryside act. as the bird is not injured.
To each their own
Hi Nighthawk - thanks for the advice - hopefully we can enjoy watching it for a bit longer and it'll eventually find its way back soon!
