hi everybody,
iwonder if any of you have noticed the same thing that i have ,here where i live we have open plan gardens ,and for quite a few years we have always had a lot of magpies around, up to a dozen at times.
u hve even filmed them trying to get a hawk to leave it,s kill, which it brought down below our window.they failed. back to what i was going to ask this year they have been conspiciuos by there absence we have hardly seen one this year anybody know why this is

I cannot say the same where I am, with my resident pair and their brood of 4 they are a constant and very noisy presence. there are also several in my local area, or as many as ever at any rate. No suggestions as to where yours might have gone. Sorry.

There are more Magpies up here than Ive ever seen. Must have been a real good year for them .. Not uncommon to see 6 or 8 together at any one time.

I have had 4 in my last garden and 1 in my new current garden. They tend to make a lot of noise so it feels there are may Magpies at times.
I do not know why Magpies disappear but the subject of the birds takig time out to grow their new feathers is probabily the most likely answer
After nesting all birds tend to go into hiding so they can grow new feathers. During this period of time they are very vulnerable to preditors, so they keep a low key so they become invisible to us - but only for a short time
Then we see them in their full glory once more
