Barbara, you could have just replied on the original post rather than start a new thread. This Forum can be rather confusing to newcomers.
With that colouring the bird is an adult male in my opinion. They are much smaller than the more powerful females which you have probably seen eating pigeons in your garden. A male would struggle to subdue a pigeon (although not impossible) and tend to prey on smaller birds up to Blackbird size.
