Strange bird

Can anyone help me to identify this bird who landed in my garden today. He is about 9" tall, beautiful mink coloured plumage on head and back, white front with an apricot coloured band showing under the chin and down under his wing. His beak is small and sharp, owl-like I would say. I will endeavour to add a picture.
