Is it my computer, browser, internet connection or the forum?

For the past two or three days the forum pages have been really slow to load. It has not been a problem with other websites.

I use both Firefox and Safari. My Mac is a bit old now and I keep getting messages that I need to update various applications, but when I try to download the updates the computer tells me it is not possible!

Comments/advice would be welcome, but I fear another expense looming.

  • I'm not sure, Alan, but I'll check that out.

  • Is your computer running out of memory, Claire? Maybe that is why you can't download updates.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Linda, That might be the problem. I tried to find out how much memory is available, but not worked that one out yet!

Alan, I have so much work based info on the computer, even if it is possible to bring it back "as new" there are so many things I would not like to risk losing.

  • I can't help with a Mac. On a PC it is easy to check the memory - I just look in my computer/C Drive/properties.  Have you got an external hard drive or other back up device where you could store all your important work based stuff and programmes?

Or simply uninstall some old unwanted programmes and delete sme files/photos after storing them elsewhere.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • I had a similar problem a week or so ago. The RSPB pages were extremely slow to load as were one or two other sites but, and this was the odd thing, pages from most sites loaded normally.

I rather doubt that it's anything to do with the capacity of your computer, Claire, otherwise they would all be slow to load. I rather suspect it's something to do with the way data is routed across the internet. Having said that I don't have any technical knowledge on the subject to back that up.

My problem just seemed to sort itself out after a couple of days without me doing anything.

  • I don't have an external hard drive, and my old version of Mac does not have an intel processor, which may be part of the difficulty.

Thanks, Alan and Linda, your comments lead me to think the slow downloading is a basic computing problem.

As you have probably realised, I am a complete techie numptie!

    Crossed posts, TeeJay.

I don't know what to think now! I have some time to ponder about it as I shall be away from home for most of the next couple of days and then off on hols for three weeks.

    Alan,

When I try to download an update, let's say a version of Firefox or Silverlight, the download is not accepted into "Applications" even if the version of Mac I have is supposed to be compatible. The "message" is that the Mac system I have is not compatible.

Can you update the main Mac software..the operating system?

No, Alan.  That is one of the reasons  I may opt for a new Mac and use the old one mainly for work.

I'll have to reassess the finances later this month!!
