E-mail addresses

Am I right in thinking that our personal e-mail address is not visible unless we want it to be?  I have received an unsolicited  private e-mail from someone who claims to have read my profile on the RSPB forum and now wants to be my 'friend'.  When I checked my profile I can't see anything there that shows my 'home' addy. Needless to say I am ignoring it.

Just to add my tuppence worth on here about e-mails

Yes, a legit e-mail system and not a non-person should be put in place

After having a look on the website, I see that you can get a temporary e-mail address that expires after 30 days.  A member who is all what they seem to be will do a lot of damage in a month and disappear into thin air after the e-mail is no more - now you see me now you dont behaviour...so that sounds not too good.

With the old Forum from a few years back i was amazed that I could open two accounts with 2 separate e-mail addresses (this was a test to see how the Forum worked)  Not tried it on this newer Forum though, and do not have the need to as I am Blackbird alive and well.

There needs to be safeguards put in place to prevent 'trolls' as well as 'spammer' for this reason alone

    Hi scylla

Now what would a person get from sending you an e-mail written in such a manner although they are stalking you...it is not nice at all.  It does make me think that this is a spammer and not a real person.  I would think that the return address they have sent you many contain a virus ...so do not be tempted to use it

For interest on here, I was using the Tinypic website last night.  i see that they have tightened their security to keep Spammers out, and this is what they do...

    • When you download a photo you will need to type in an allocated code of text from a logo that is sent to you to show that you are a real person - if you mistype the text you cannot receive details of your photos.  I think it is a good idea to do that even though it takes longer to get a hold of your resized photos from Tinypic (and they are a free service)

  • Hello Scylla,

I had the same email last Friday, from this person.  I deleted it from my junk box and blocked it as well.I think the mods should look into this and do something for all of us.Do not reply to it.

There are definitely nutters out there..

  • That is the same one Scylla, it's same date - we are all rspb forum members so somehow, someone HAS accessed the e-mail addresses - I know Scylla and Tiger are mainly on the LG pages so it's back to Cliff I am sorry to say.

  • It's probably a computer using translation software to try getting you to part with your hard earned.

That's why they sound a bit stalkery (is that actually a word?)

Maybe a good idea to send the email to a mod (If there is a way to do that?)

That way the community knows who and what they are trying to do.

  • Hi all,

I can understand that people dropping into this thread may have concerns that we're not doing anything about these reports. Hopefully a quick trawl back through the thread will show we've been working hard. If not, please be assured we are and that we treat reports like this with the utmost importance. I hope my post from this morning helps to explain that we have and continue to take every action we can to ensure this Community is protected:

    http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/about/f/909/p/51781/349880.aspx#349880

We have far from closed the book on this. If a "spambot" (the software that someone would use to try to find email addresses) was scanning the site prior to the emails being received, we would expect to see a clear pattern in the community site's file history. Despite looking in great detail under the bonnet back to over a week prior to the date of the emails coming through, we haven't found such a pattern. However, the link between naming this site and the emails coming through means we mustn't relax. And we don't intend to. Thankfully there's been no reports of emails being received since the 28th, which may indicate that the additional security we put in place last Friday has blocked any unwanted attention.

But as I said, we will not be satisfied until we've had another independent security audit that we will act on if there are any recommendations.

    Kind regards,

    Cliff

  • Hi Doggie - thanks for this.

Yes, good shout. We do require you to click a link in an email before your account is activated (sometimes called an "activation email"). This is a good system. It won't stop a determined troll (ie a real person that wants to stir up trouble) from creating an email account, registering and being rude, etc, but it will stop automated "bots" creating accounts and then wholesale spamming the community etc.

Thanks for the suggestion - it's a good call. Thankfully we have that one covered.

    Kindest regards,

    Cliff
