Am I right in thinking that our personal e-mail address is not visible unless we want it to be? I have received an unsolicited private e-mail from someone who claims to have read my profile on the RSPB forum and now wants to be my 'friend'. When I checked my profile I can't see anything there that shows my 'home' addy. Needless to say I am ignoring it.

Hi all,
This has always been the case with our forums I'm afraid. Google anything you have seen or written on the forum and it will appear as large as life on Google. Everything you say on the forum is available for the world to see, whether they are members or not, and this includes children by the way!!
Borderslass is right in what she says about the Googlebot and the way Google operates. I also have my own website and use Google Webmaster to ensure my website pages appear near the top of Google.
Cheers, Linda.

I don't mind people being able to see the postings we make - you can do that on BirdForum, for example. I do think personal profiles should not be in the public domain.

It makes perfect sense Alan, but I can't explain on here (as now I know it is available to anyone) why I have a particular problem. I need to change my user name on the forum urgently. Do you know how I can do it? I am also going to remove all the information on my profile page until I find out what is going on about that from the mods. If I can't change my RSPB user name, I will have to close my membership and restart it under a different name. I expect these two things are the only real problems I have.
bye for now

Hi Alan, sorry to go incognito, will send you a message! It isn't rocket science to know who I was before because I have kept the same avatar, for my friends!
Welcome Tulip. I'm sure you will enjoy this friendly forum. Just don't leave us !!!!!
Tulip I do not wish to alarm you, but If I click on your profile and view your recent activity I can see what your previous name was at is just appears next to former posts. Not sure if it would If i was not logged in. Will try that now.
