Am I right in thinking that our personal e-mail address is not visible unless we want it to be? I have received an unsolicited private e-mail from someone who claims to have read my profile on the RSPB forum and now wants to be my 'friend'. When I checked my profile I can't see anything there that shows my 'home' addy. Needless to say I am ignoring it.

Thanks Cliff,
It's good to know we are in safe hands!
Cheers, Linda.

Hello Cliff,
Thank you for taking the trouble with us two, this person had a poor English grammar, they were a foreign person.

Cliff, Thank you for your quick attention to this. Would it be an idea for me to forward the email you and if so how so? Don't really want to give oxygen to spammers by posting a copy here.

More likely pretending to be, Jenny
Sorry, Jenny and Caroline I didn't mean to patronise you by suggesting you didn't know the difference between a friends request through the RSPB and a direct spam approach.
How they would have got hold of your email address is worrying although I've had unsolicited spam from those sort of people in the past.
Cliff - What slightly concerns me is that people who are not members of this forum can still view members profile pages. Is there any way to restrict this access to members only?

Cliff - I hadn't realised they could do that!
See no reason why non-members should be able to do that, and I would ask the same question as TJ.

Jackdaw
Seriously thinking about trying harder!
It has always been the case that unregistered people can view our profile pages - it isn't something new on this updated website.
What is definitely worrying about this is you can easily find your profile page on GOOGLE. Just type in your user name, RSPB and profile - and you will see. You may not even need a user-name. Maybe other key words on your profile page will find it. The whole world can see it, not just a casual browser.

Yes, Linda, I did know that but it still concerns me nevertheless. I certainly had no idea you could Google it though. Nothing is private in this cyber world that we live in today.
TJ, Doggie and others please do not worry not patronised in the slightest. My main concern is that this person has directly referenced the RSPB in their email. I can confirm that Jennilien and I have been contacted by the same person.
