Known issue: Site very slow

We are aware that the RSPB website, including the Community, has been intermittently very slow for some users since 2 July. Please bear with us. We sincerely apologise for the frustration this is causing.

We are investigating the problem as a matter of urgency but have not yet discovered the root cause of the problem.

This thread will be updated with information as and when we have it. Thanks for your patience.

    Hi Graham

Slowed up in the upload at this moment of time now as I type this.  Sticking with the page showing half of its content on here until it moved itself.to the next stage

Can I ask if the slowness is due to any server backups that you may do at certain points of the day/week - just interested?

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • I'm having all sorts of problems.....uploading pictures has been problematic since this new site started for me. Also when typing text and you hit return to start a new line/paragraph the curser just disappears and takes several goes to actually be in a position to start writing again. Right click commands don't work most of the time and spell check is 'random'. Getting links into your post is almost impossible most of the time....All a bit annoying.....I'm running Vista if it helps and don't suffer problems on other sites?

  • The RSPB Techies do have some serious problems. I keep getting this message:

I can confirm the vanishing cursor issue. It has been an intermittent problem for me for about a week, and I haven't tracked down the circumstances which lead to it yet.

I use mostly the Loch Garten Ospreys forum, and since yesterday loading has been slow. As others have noted, the main problems are with rich text formatting. Images became gradually slower to upload in the afternoon and by about 6pm it was impossible.

For reference, I use Firefox 3.6.18, running under Windows 7 32-bit. I also have Win XP SP3, and several other browsers installed in both systems, so will test with those later.

  • I also got the same kind of SQL error reporting as rhodopsin on two occasions several days ago, but it has not happened since.

    Graham

If its of use today. I managed to upload a picture this morning from my PC.

When I chose the file it's name was shown in italics on the the upload status bar box. Also in red it was still asking me to choose a file to upload (It has always done this for me by the way).

When I hit the insert button the file name then changed from italics to normal font and the file uploaded very quickly.

  • Hey Graham. I posted on three threads this evening (but only just saw your request).  They were Weekly Chat, Daily Update, and the new LG Gabfest All three threads loaded immediately first time around from the Loch Garten Osprey forum page.

On Weekly Chat,  Did two trial posts at 6:06 and 6:07); both were very fast. At other times this evening, the upload was immediate, another short post took about 5-10 seconds to upload, but a much longer post appeared not to upload at all.  I tried to refresh on that occasion; nothing happened, but when I closed the page and came back to the LG Forum page, my post appeared as "Latest post by..."

Posting on the Daily Update page seemed very erratic.  I just now (6:24 a.m.) posted a simple message that took 30 seconds to upload. Earlier uploads ranged from less than 5 seconds to not at all Again, I'd tried to refresh the page with no luck so I closed the page, then went back to the LG Forum page, which again loaded immediately. One one occasion (I think), my aborted post had in fact uploaded, but in another case, it hadn't. As I said, very erratic.

I posted just once on the GabFest page (simple post) and that uploaded immediately.

FYI, using the "back" arrows on the browser to go to a previous page seemed to take longer than usual.

Also, Scylla (on Daily Update) said that "straight" posts (assume not Rich Text) were faster for her this evening than yesterday.  I must say that when it was fast, it was fast, but it was also very hit and miss!

Also FYI, three other bloggers are in the U.S.: Diane in Indiana, Barbara in Wisconson, and June Spradin (GabFest) is in Ohio.  Diane says she hasn't been having problems, but she also hasn't been posting as much.  Let me know if I there's anything else I can do to help. (And let's see how long this takes to load!)  :-))

  • Graham: That 6:43 a.m. post took about 45 seconds to upload.

  • Graham: Oh very interesting, that one took at 10 seconds, but halfway through, I got a message in red saying there was a problem in transmission and to try the Rich Text option; however, it uploaded!!!!  Good luck folks!!
