Known issue: Site very slow

We are aware that the RSPB website, including the Community, has been intermittently very slow for some users since 2 July. Please bear with us. We sincerely apologise for the frustration this is causing.

We are investigating the problem as a matter of urgency but have not yet discovered the root cause of the problem.

This thread will be updated with information as and when we have it. Thanks for your patience.

    Graham,

Earlier this morning when I first logged on I found I could upload some pictures. A short while later and I couldn't. Messing about for a while I found that the following seemed to be causing me problems with regards to uploading pictures.

    1) Logging on from the RSPB home page rather than from within the forum itself (Community page)

    2) Having Adobe Lightroom open on the MAC at the same time as trying to upload

    3) Having the picture I was attempting to upload open in preview on the MAC at the same time as trying to upload it

Closing down 2 and 3 then logging off the Forum and logging on from within the Community page seemed to solve the problem regarding uploads.

  • Morning Graham,

Everything was going fine this morning, I was able to go back and forth between threads and post responses, all working quickly and I was using either the back button or Community header until I opened a new window to the LG webcam..then  had difficulty getting back into the community - page hung then timed out.  Shut down and rebooted, seems sorted for the moment.  System is Mac OS X, browser is Safari.

  • Everything seems normal for me this morning. I have been able to upload pics to the LG Daily Pages. I have been unable to do this lately. IE 9 Win. Vista 32bit (latest version)

  • Everything has always been normal for me with two exceptions.

    1.  When using Quick Reply I sometimes get a message in red telling me there is a problem and to use Rich Formatting.

    2.  When using Quick Reply it is sometimes very slow to load the reply.

Other than that I have never experienced any slowness, hanging, or difficulty posting photos and the site navigation is very fast. I use the site every day from about 10am at various times of the day and evening.

Windows XP Home, IE8. (P.C. not laptop), BT Broadband.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi all,

Thanks for posting your experiences. They are all useful - the more detail the better.

Just to confirm, we have made no changes so far so if you are seeing good performance this is merely demonstrating the intermittent nature of the problem. We are still investigating and will post an update as soon as we have some concrete information.

    Thanks for your patience.

  • I had no problems with the site until the 2nd of this month thinking it might be a problem at my end I posted the "slow Site" thread to get some idea how others where finding it and since then I had a brief spell yesterday (07/07/11)  when I was able to upload photo's but now it is back to a crawl. 2mins 15sec to log in.

    Hi Graham

I only logged in this moment, got tossed out, and a lot of gobbledeguk {sp} came up on my screen - still I remained logged in so that seemed alright in an odd way

I posted photos under the normal tool last night - my Woodpigeosn thread (away form URL's) and at times it took more than one attempt to get the photos to register on the screen.

I have Vista by the way.

    Regards

  • Logged on to Blacktoft community at the moment, and response is very good loading pictures.  Could the problem be the security options on the various varieties of Windows?  I use Firefox on Linux, and rarely have any problems, although I do have good cable broadband, my own firewall and proxy server.

I am a birder that takes "snap shots" for personal pleasure;  not a photographer for whom the image comes before the welfare of the bird.

  • As I said this morning, everything was fine then, but it  has just taken me 12 mins to upload a photograph and then another 2 mins to post. Posts without pics are still posting quickly. The LG forum is always busy at this time of the year and we haven't had this problem.

  • Graham, for the last couple days speed has been fine during the day but seems to slow down early even ing until about 10 pm it is a case of 2 to 3 mins to do anything, back up again today a little slow but quite usable.
