Slow site

Is any it just me? Or is this site running slowly this morning I have cleared my cookie cache and all temp files to no avail it's like running through treacle.

Things like ebay, flickr etc. are fine.

The suggestion that it is our service providers is not credible

  • Just to give you an idea of how slow it is, it took 4 mins just to refresh this page. I went to the  Amazon home page which has a lot of graphics on it and it loaded in under a second.

I honestly don't think the ISP has anything to do with it.

  • Graham,  Over the weekend I couldn't do anything and just gave up.  Everything I did either froze or it was taking so long I was walking away from the computer, coming back and it still hadn't loaded.

Edit:  It is now working faster than it has ever been! (12.15 4/7).    Must be something to do with having achieved independence today.

  • I am sorry but how can it be a service provider problem if this is the only site I use that is running very slowly?. I am with virgin media, I have uploaded quite a few photo's to flikr this weekend with no problems likewise I been on many other sites with no trouble.

  • Hi Graham,

I do hope that this problem has not been brushed aside as a service provider issue.

Can you confirm that the matter is being investigated further?

  • Hi all,

It's useful to hear that you were able to access other sites without issue while ours was slow for you. However, bear in mind that some people have said they saw no speed problems at all over the weekend.

The chart I posted shows that there was no significant rise in load times over the weekend. I hesitate to say "proves" but the performance monitor we use is the most unbiased website monitoring tool available, so it's as close to proof as it comes.

In contrast, the route from your house to our website (or any website) is highly "biased" by virtue of the fact that it passes through many servers that neither your broadband provider or us have any control over.

For all we know, sections of the internet between your broadband provider and our hosting company were damaged or undergoing maintenance over the weekend. This happens all the time and it will affect different broadband providers in different ways (at the moment, for example, there are severe problems affecting Eire and substantial problems affecting Norway). The route you take to get to Flickr or Amazon is not the same route you take to get to the BBC, Google or anyone else. Also, large companies like Google and Amazon have literally thousands of web servers all over the world which means that if one part of the internet is struggling, your request will bypass this congestion and be routed somewhere else. With our extremely modest budget we are limited to being hosted in one place. Only last year our site and many others were brought down because a single BT line was severed in central London. Other internet traffic coming through that area would have been routed around this breakage - being slowed down in the process.

This shows how one website can seem to be performing poorly while others perform well on the same broadband connection - and while the sites themselves are actually serving pages quickly.

The speed of the site is not the same as the uploading of images taking a long time or failing. As, I have already said, we are looking into this separately.

@Sparrow: FYI we are no longer on the hardware that gave a 50/50 chance of visiting the "bad" server if it was performing poorly.

  • No way can this be an ISP problem seeing that all of us seem to be having the same problm but only on this site.At the moment it talges a minimum of 45 secs to change threads, vey few people have the time or patience to waste like this.Could be the end of the forum as we know it.

Are you saying there are no longer two servers, Graham?

If that is the case, why was it that all those members who showed up as being on-line on my main page were, like me, having NO problems, BUT all those NOT showing as on-line on my main page WERE having problems? Surely this can't have been a coincidence?

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi Sparrow,

That's good information - thanks. We now have multiple servers.
