My Song Thrush has found a mate.

Hi everyone I'm so excited, just had to tell everyone, I've been feeling so sorry for the Song Thrush I've had visiting, he/she has been getting mobbed and chased away by the Blakbirds whenever he comes to my garden for a feed, and he's been getting so nervous of late with the Blackbirds now in pairs attacking him, and all on his own while I have noticed lot's of my birds pairing up, I had wondered if he would find a mate with them being so scarce now, AND HE HAS, he turned up today with his own mate, with a mate for support now I hope the Blackbirds might leave him alone. I don't suppose they will though with all the fighting for there patch of land now spring is on it's way.

Being new to this, I don't know but does it ever happen that some birds won't find a mate and miss a breeding season.

  • My wren has returned and sat in the porch looking for food.  ALSO, 1 pied wagtail, never had one here before !  Plus 3 GS Woodpeckers at same time, trying to use the same feeder. I thought they had learnt that it should be one as a time. We have about 7" of snow today and still snowing, so I guess that is why we have Mr. Wagtail and Miss Wren has returned.

  • Hi Brenda,

Wow - well done and excellent news about the pied wagtail Brenda. Mine arrived in the snow in January and is still with me. I can't stop looking at him. He looks so delicate with those thin legs. You must be very chuffed about his visit. Now he has foud you, he may keep coming. You can now join the Wags club. Must tell Buzzard to put your name down!

Also brilliant Miss Wren has returned, AND 3 GS woodpeckers - now that could be considered greedy!!!

7" of snow is a lot of white stuff. Poor you. We got a very light dusting yesterday, but nothing more.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Great news Brenda (about the P.W. that is - not the snow!) and a warm Welcome to the WAGS Club. I've not seen a wren in my garden - but then owing to the layout of this quaint Victorian heap I can't actually see much of the garden unless I go outside which is guaranteed to make every bird (and quite a few neighbourhood cats) dive for cover.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

Hi Brenda your so lucky, I have yet to tempt the woodpecker that sits in the oak tree outside our garden in for a feed, I'm not sure if he's a GS or a LS he does have a red spot on the back of his head which does make him a male doesn't it ?

we also had lot's of snow, I wonder if this is why my wren showed up .

  • Hi Brenda,

Sounds like you have a GSW, red spot means male, you just have to get him in your garden, mine loves fat balls, place them high and near the trees. good luck.

Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!

  •  Hi BBB,  The LS Woodpecker  male has red crown

The GS Woodpecker has red patch on back of  head.

I don't know about either of our Wrens, but they knew where to find food when the snow arrived. There is just no loyalty with birds. sob.

  • Hi,

Not seen my wren, but its so small I could of missed it, he likes to go around my herbs, in my flower beds.

I've had a fair bit of snow here, but its gone now, still quite cold here.

My blackbirds are back, loads again.

Thanks Brenda, never mind it's still nice to see them when they do show there faces isn't  it, they are one of my favorite birds there just so sweet, I saw some leave there nest last year over in my Mums garden, they floated one by one there little wings going like mad, and one by one it looked like they were trying  to land on my car window where they slid down the door and landed with a plop on the ground, unhurt  I'll add, it was quite comical.

Hi Janet I'm like that I don't know if he turns everyday or not, mine seems to like dashing about under cover, so I could miss him quite easily. And I wish that snow would stay away.
