Hi
I used to use the fat form my grill pan or meat dish to supplement kitchen scraps and feed the birds.
I read somewhere that this isn't good for them, can anybody please advise me
Thanks
If it is bad for the Birds they will leave it. Many Birds will scavenge in tips and bins. These varied diet birds tend to do the best in hard winters!! Humans have enough trouble knowing what to eat themselves, the idea that they know better than the birds what they should eat, I find a little silly. It is always food for some creature out there.

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Hello birdybiker,
So many household scraps are perfectly fine to put out for birds, but fat from cooking is bad for them. The problem with cooked fat from roasting tins and dishes is that the meat juices have blended with the fat and when allowed to set, this consistency makes it prone to smearing, not good for birds' feathers. It is also a breeding ground for bacteria, so potentially bad for birds' health. Salt levels depend on what meat is used and if any salt is added during cooking. Lard and beef suet on their own are fine as they re-solidify after warming and as they are pure fat, it is not as suitable for bacteria to breed on.
Thanks, Mrs T for the advice. Have always wondered about this subject.
I used to pour the leftover fat over bread which would soak it all up and then put it out for the birds, it was lucky to survive half an hour outside, I think the starlings must have some sort of sixth sense when "fatty bread" is out!

Thanks very much for the info.
