During the weekend's bird count we spotted 11 magpies in a tree opposite our house. Is this unusual, we've never seen so many at one time.
Not sure really! I've certainly never seen that many at one time but then a lot of birds do 'flock' during the colder months so maybe mags do too?
Oh and welcome to the forum!

Hi Mary, and welcome to the forum. Hope you enjoy it.
We get a lot of magpies here, although none land in my garden. I've never seen so many together in one tree, although I do a lot in the adjacent field at the same time, but not what you would call "together"
Cheers, Linda.

I have just read the RSPB page on the ' life cycle' of Magpies. It says that breeding magpies have a territory of 12 acres and therefore 25% to 60% of non breeding birds form flocks. This, I presume, means you could easily see eleven of them together.
I spotted about 8 in one tree at the back of my garden just after Christmas, it did make me stop and pause for a minute and watch as they were making a rucus. I've never seen that many since.
Make me a coffee and put me in front of the kitchen window!
Although we only get one in the garden, who at one point couldn't fly and used to climb the fence to get out of the garden - buts that's a different story. On the walkway Magpies flock together and in one of the larger trees down towards the fields its not unusual to see 15.
I get two landing in my garden, and there is nomaly two watching. they come nearly every day, they eat the mix I put out, on the gound and on one of my tables.
I most I have seen in one time was seven, that was in a field.
Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!
Thanks to everyone, it's been great getting all your experiences and good to know we didn't imagine it!
