Does anyone know if there are tagged kestrels? I ask as a few weeks back, I took some pics of a hovering kestrel and when I looked at them, I noticed a something sticking out underneath the bird's 'belly'! This isn't the best pic of the bird, but is better for showing this 'thing'! Is is a tagged bird, or has unfortunately been speared by something? It was hovering and hunting quite happily which leads me to think that it was more likely a tag! Anyway, be interested to hear your thoughts!

I can see what you mean. When you blow the picture up you can see quite a thin object sticking out. underneath.
I thought that they tended to have these little aerials fixed to their backs so that it doesn't interfere with normal activities.
I don't know whether they tag kestrels but if anyone will know I'll bet it will be Buzzard.

I have found an article about S, African ketrels being sat. tag. but not applicable to here. I think it is quite possible as more birds are now sat. tagged than we hear about. I follow the ospreys and eagles , but sorry I can't be of more help. The back pack on the bird contains the solar panel and the aerial points to the sky. It may have slipped. They are made so they fall off the bird after about three years.
Well I guess no-one knows then...lol!
This ones baffling us as well, we doubt that it is a tag due to the location of the spike, very bizarre! If you come across this kestrel again and can get a look at its front we'd be really interested to find out whats going on!

Thanks Ian! I do often see a kestrel in the area (near work) so assume it's the same one! I'll try to have a better look and also get better pictures!

Seen something similar before in Buzzards and Hen harriers, and I think this may be the same thing.
What seems to happen is this, when the birds make a kill attempt, IE dropping into the grass very quickly for a vole or whatever - loose grass stems etc can get momentarily stuck in the underside plumage, or in the talons.
I'm pretty sure that's what has happened here.
