I know my mum had a huge hollow sea shell as a bird bath and the Blackbirds loved it.

I have three - the 'main' one is simply a large green square shallow plant pot tray, into which I place two stones of differing sizes, one for the smaller birds to perch on, and another as a makeshift ramp incase anything falls in and can't get out again (even though the water is barely two inches deep, I still worry!). The other two are part of the two feeding stations I bought on Monday - they can be attached to the poles at any height I choose, but they are as yet unused.

My feeding station also has a water dish on the pole that can be fixed at any height. It is just a metal ring holder with a plastic dish inserted. I used it for water once, then realised it was being used as a toilet by the starlings!! It didn't seem to matter where on the pole I had it, or which direction it faced, it always caught the droppings!!! This is because the starlings use the pinnacle of the pole as a roost during the day, and also a look out post, in addition to usig the feeders. I now put the plastic dish elsewhere in the garden.

I don't like the ones that attatch to the feeding poles, they just end up clogged with seed and bird poo and can't by hygenic at all. I had one and it was filthy within minutes of the birds arriving to feed! I think it is a bad idea putting water right underneath the feeders, especially busy feeding stations!

I had a feeder once (I left it with my last neighbours) with bits that could be added and I had a plastic dish and it got really dirty very quickly - so not a great arrangement.
Our current bird bath we have is so much better to us. The Wood Pigeons love to sit in it in the warm weather cooling their bottoms, or something like that. The Woodpigeons are the worst offenders for messing up the bath simply due to the size of their droppings

Interesting to have the water dish airborne instead, and it is good that the bird can drink clean and clear water at all times.

Mine Froze stiff, got top heavy then went for a Burton onto stiff ground.!
I have other dishes, but now i'm in the market for something simple, but stylish.
We use large seed trays or plant pot under trays. They're particularly popular with the starlings in summer:

It's a heavy stone one that's good and sturdy, about 20" high.
It's close to a hedge, shrubs and small trees so there's plenty of shelter/cover for bathing birds to dart into id need be !
