Safflower seed/Peanut granules

I have seen that some people use Safflower seed - Squirrel and Birdmum have mentioned this.

I am about to do a bulk order for food on-line and am wondering whether to order some. Please can you tell me which birds eat it, is it popular, do you get a lot thrown out of the feeders, and anything else good or bad about it? I would be grateful.

Also, Peanut granules. I bought a tub of these to use instead of whole peanuts when my crew began to ignore the  peanut feeders. I add some to my flat feeders but not much gets eaten. I have tried it in a peanut feeder but it either falls through the holes or gets soggy. I had thought of making peanut granule suet mix, but how else do you use it, and is it popular?

Cheers, Linda.

  • Kezmo, I think you will find that your new huge feeder wil be more than 'over a foot long' if it is as big as our one. You haven't a hope of hiding it !

  • Hi Birdmum - I too earn my own money but do tend to spend an awful lot of it on my birds..................that's why I'm being a bit sneaky with the latest addition.  OH has his money and both our earnings go into the pot so to speak, it's just mine has another little pot that pennies seem to drop into!!!!!

The problem is that my new bird feeder is bright green and over a foot long - am wondering how I can put it on the tree without him noticing it....and of course for a big feeder I need big food so need to go out and get another sneaky load without OH's knowledge!

LOL Kezmo, Birds of a Feather indeed!!! I also smuggle in the bird food since he made a few comments about the expense, and I just daren't let him see the invoice from the bulk order I submitted last night!!! I have deleted the email with it on!!!! When it arrives I will no doubt mutter something about massive discounts, sales, and end of lines!

I do have one advantage though. He isn't very observant, and wouldn't notice a new feeder, even a bright green long one.

Why do I do this?  I have my own money, my own personal bank account, and always have had.  Answers on a postcard please. I have no idea. I think I inherited it from my mum, who did the same thing. She was a good teacher!

    Cheers, Linda.

    Hi Brenda

Yeah I think you could be right...................he soon spotted the previous one I bought a week ago (ahem!) even when I thought I had cleverly hid it behind a branch of the apple tree.

  • I simply tell my OH that if he expects me to go on feeding him then he must expect me to also feed the birds! (Threatened removal of the Sunday Roast has a wonderful effect on the charitable nature of the male of the species, I find).

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Happily this wouldn't work for me - he does all the cooking!!!!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Your posts have made me laugh!  We'll have to see whether your respective OH's spot your feeders etc sooner later :o)

You could always say its part of your hobby and point out they have theirs too, lol!

Luckily I have no one to answer to where bird food is concerned - and its a good job, I had a bank statement yesterday and the RSPB Online shop featured twice as well as the garden centre!

  • I ran out of mealworms and suet pellets this morning, and watching the starlings looking for them was very amusing. I gave in and went to the local pet food supplier and bought a small bag of each. When I got home, the bulk order had arrived, including mealworms and suet pellets, and was on the doorstep.Typical. I am now over run with bird food, and no way could it be hidden from hubby. He had to carry the sacks indoors for me, and even helped me unpack it all. He was very silent though!! I told him it would last through to the summer, and he believed me.

I now have my safflower, and I decided to try sunflower heart chips, which are supposed to be better with less waste. However, I haven't enough feeders!!! I am now in  a mess with it all, and need a lie down somewhere quiet to decide what to put where and in what!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Sorry Sparrow, but I have a vision of you buried under sacks of birdfood. Waiting to hear how you convince hubby that you now need more feeders.
