What bird did I see??

I saw a new bird in my garden this morning and can only describe it as a giant robin!!   It didn't hang around for long, and by the time I had my camera ready it was off!  It was a brownish colour with red on the side, and I would say it was about the same size as a song thrush. Any ideas anyone? I hope to get a pic if it come's back!      ;-)

    Hi Luisa

Sounds very much like a Redwing. They are a member of the thrush family and a winter visitor to these shores. They have been coming into gardens in great numbers this year in search of food during this very cold weather. Did it look like this?

Very attractive birds aren't they. Well done for spotting it.

  • Yes, thank you, I'm pretty sure this is the bird I saw in my garden, the red part stood out!  I would love to get a pic of it, if it come's back. Do you know if they have a food preference? I could try and tempt it back!

    Thank you! x

  • Hi again

Well as you can see from the photo what they really like are berries. They stripped the berries on my pyracantha bush in no time at all. You could try some chopped up apple or pears, the riper the better.

I suspect, however, that now the thaw has come they will disappear back into the countryside which is their normal habitat, but you never know.
