i put a post on here yesterday which mention how a Heron joined the ducks as i feeding them with my daughters and was eating bread. We see him most days sat on the river bank near our house.
I wondered if there was anything i could give him to eat as bread scraps dont really seem like im doing enough...he must be very hungry.
Would i be able to give him fish from the fish mongers...and if so what type? would sardines or somethine be okay?
Hi Nikki!
Tough one! I heard on the Snow watch program Wednesday eve that a bittern at Slimbridge was being fed sprats to help him through the cold spell!

That is a tough one, I also seen a heron on Snow Watch that was feeding with Red Kites stealing some of their food too. I would not see a problem in leaving out some form of fish for him as long it is as natural as possible. I think Herons usually eat any type of small fish, amphibians and small mammals. So i couldn't see a problem with feeding him some small fish.
all for nature, without it, we would not be here....
well they didnt have a very good selection of small fish at the supermarket so i bought the smallest trout i could and cut it up so it was in thin strips. i took it with me today and fed the ducks as usual...within a few minutes Mr Heron was there so i threw him a couple of pieces which he took. so i threw in the rest he ate most of it an some bread too. i shall buy some more next time i go shopping.
i think he is only young as he is quite small compared to other herons i have seen around here, i keep saying he is there a way of telling the difference between males and females?
