I moved to my farmhouse in April last year and around July / August time I started hearing strange noises in the loft. My loft is crawl space only and is made of timber with no insulation so you can imagine the noise when they decide to use my roof as a race track. My farmer landlord gave me some poison for rats, however the noise has not decreased in fact I would say that it has increased. I would like to know whether anybody has any opinions as to what they could be. Also is there a more humane way of removing any visitors to my roof I am really not comfortable with putting poisons out, it doesnt sit well with me and I will not be doing it again, not sure landlord will agree with me, especially as he lives next door and Bill and Ben are visiting him!
We used to have squirrels in our roof - they make a heck of a noise and tend to chase and play around up there so maybe that's what you have - they were chewing there way through the cement in the ridge tiles and making a hole to get in. We had them evicted by our handyman and they were put back into the garden (am not sure if you are legally allowed to let squirrels back into the wild as they are classed as vermin?) anyway off they went and he cemented the holes up and within a few months they were back in so we left them to it although I did worry at times about the electric wire up there! They did eventually leave to breed and the handyman did a much more involved job on the roof to stop them getting back in!
Hi there, depending on where you live it could be Glis Glis which are a protected species.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
My squirrels chewed the soffit boards & cable, had to get pvc soffits in the end.
You could try a camera up there to see what it is or some friendly traps that don't kill.
We've got something in our loft as walls (the walls are hollow) but my OH doesn't believe me. Whatever it is there are making one hell of a noise!
In our loft it is probably rats as there is a rat problem around here. We used to have them in our kitchen but haven't seen any signs of them there for ages after they broke into the cupboard with a box of rat poison in which they proceeded to eat. So I seem to have suicidal rats lol
