...scatter the niger seed all over the garden or at least all at the bottom of the poles of the feeders...we keep them filled but more ends up on the ground....we use the plastic feeders with small holes just for golfinches...any info would be great.
You can get nyger seed feeders with a plastic tray under the tube. This will stop a lot of the seed falling on the ground but you will probably have to clean the tray regularly.
Hope this helps

Hi Meggzie, Welcome to the forum.
Goldfinches do not eat the whole seed?
They “husk” the seed and eat just the kernel.
As a result, under the feeder hulled nyjer seed will collect.
In most areas this presents no problem, but you can scoop up the hulls every few days or weeks and use it as mulch for other garden or house plants.
Take a close look at what is on the floor, you may find a perfect hulled seed!!!

Hi Meggzie, and welcome to the forum.
Listen carefully to what Buzzard says - he is the expert on attracting goldfinches!!!!
I didn't know that about the husk, Buzzard. Thanks for that. It is a gravel area under my nyjer feeder, and with it being such a tiny seed it must disappear under the gravel.
Cheers, Linda.
