Top 5 population of your garden

By this I mean in numbers so 1 is the highest amount of birds. Just to see if there are similarities state your County & habitat i.e. urban, countryside, coastal, etc. I'm just wondering about the sparrows being on red list & seeing whether we have similarities which contrast the theory of reduced numbers.

My area is Urban - West Midlands.

1. Starlings (approximately 40-55).

2.Collared Doves (approximately 18-22)

3. Sparrows (approximately 12-18)

4.Wood Pigeons (approximately 8-11)

5. Dunnocks (approximately 5-7)

So what findings /research do they have for sparrows in your Bedford group Blackbird?

  • The Chaffinches seem to be around most of the day, or at least some of them will be there at any one time.  My Great Tits are the same. My Starlings all arrive at once like a gang, stay half an hour and then move on. I  can't imagine having 55 in my garden all at once.

My great tits are down to 1 pair. They bred well in the spring/summer though. Sometimes I get a big starling mob of that size and it starts a huge frenzy where every bird just grabs whatever it can while it's there. But starlings are quite funny to watch.

  • Also in rural Cambridgeshire (Backing on to Fenland farm fields)

1 - Starling   18 max - 2 smaller bands who occasionally join up
2 - Collared Dove  16 max  (usually 2-3 pairs)  - they get sprawked & catted and yet they still keep on appearing
3 - Jackdaws   16 max - currently only a couple of brave pairs coming in
    4 - Sparrows (House)  15 max - down to 2 or 3 at present

5 - is a problem!  Nothing else is present at more than 3 or 4 apart from the occasional wandering troupe of long-tailed tits (10 max).  Woodpigeons in their scores graze the rapeseed field behind but only a couple come in the garden.  Now if the rooks which picked clean next doors walnut tree in the autumn would just pop over the fence they were about a dozen strong - but although the tree is less than 20ft from our boundary never once did the rooks come in.

  • Hello.

I live in a suburban area of North Lanarkshire.

    1) Starling.

    2) House Sparrow.

    3) Collared Dove.

    4) Chaffinch.

    5) Dunnock.

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

Oh that's interesting redwing, sparrows aren't in your top 5.

Do you get any sparrows visit your garden?

Birdmum, i see no sparrows at all here - ever !

When i lived in a different part of the town there were dozens of tree and house sparrows but not up here on this hillside.

    Queer eh?!

  • Having looked at all the lists it seems we are all much the same. It seems to be chaffinches that I am missing - none is my count.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Great idea fora thread!

On the edge of our town in Cheshire we get:

    Starlings (50+)

    Collared doves (40+)

    House Sparrows (30+)

Greenfinches (20+, but hard to tell as they live in the conifers in the front garden)

    Blakcbirds (10ish)

We also find the sparrowhawks take a collared dove from time to time. We have a largish pine tree in the middle of the back garden where the collared doves like to sit, so all the sparrowhawk has to do is to pick one, like picking a rotisserie chicken at the Sainsburys deli counter.

A closed mouth gathers no foot.

    LOL Maisie.

I hope all those birds aren't in your garden at the same time or there would be no room for you!

    Cheers, Linda.
