By this I mean in numbers so 1 is the highest amount of birds. Just to see if there are similarities state your County & habitat i.e. urban, countryside, coastal, etc. I'm just wondering about the sparrows being on red list & seeing whether we have similarities which contrast the theory of reduced numbers.
My area is Urban - West Midlands.
1. Starlings (approximately 40-55).
2.Collared Doves (approximately 18-22)
3. Sparrows (approximately 12-18)
4.Wood Pigeons (approximately 8-11)
5. Dunnocks (approximately 5-7)
I know my parents have absolutely no house sparrows at all, so I'm guessing it's an area thing (live about 50 miles away from me)This has an interesting breakdown of regional decline and increase : http://www.bto.org/appeals/house_sparrow.htmScroll to the bottom of the page :)
I've only ever seen a female here, never a male, but I hope she can find a mate in spring.

Thanks for that - very interesting reading :o)
Sad that the reason isn't really known for their decline - more the reason to take even more care over the ones that we get in the gardens!
Birdmum, the male Sparrowhawk rarely shows up here, I scared him (well we scared eachother lol) once on top of the greenhouse. I think he's much more of the inexperience hunter, and if they're a pair I've never seen young around.
Thankyou PeregrineRhi,
That's a really good link, I have saved it. It did say that we are stable in the West Mids Paul.
I think PVC soffit boards & fascias are a reason, The birds can't get through these like wooden ones to nest. I have got PVC ones but I am going to get a special sparrow colony nest box put up this year.
Hi, I live in rural Cambridgeshire and my top 5 are;
1) Chaffinches, about 10- 14
2) Starlings, about 10
3) Great Tits about 8 -10
4) Sparrows about 6-8
5) Blue Tits about 5
I think Sparrows numbers are greatly reduced. They used to be everywhere now I feel lucky to have my few.
thankyou verne I am going to look back to the above link to see about Cambridgeshire results.
The south east has the 3rd highest reduction at 28% less. So that makes sense.
I can't imagine seeing so many chaffinches together (your number 1) I only have 2-3. So I guess it's a case of regional swings & roundabouts.
In Bedford at the moment
Top five birds
1. Starlings
2. Blackbirds
3. Woodpigeons
4. Collared Doves
5. Robins
Mind you my last garden would be a different reply even though it is a mile away form our current address.
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Is Bedford near Buckinghamshire Blackbird, sorry I've never been there, so I am trying to figure out your bearings for the regional results.
I have my Bedford group to show what I have in my region {smile}
Happy at that
