By this I mean in numbers so 1 is the highest amount of birds. Just to see if there are similarities state your County & habitat i.e. urban, countryside, coastal, etc. I'm just wondering about the sparrows being on red list & seeing whether we have similarities which contrast the theory of reduced numbers.
My area is Urban - West Midlands.
1. Starlings (approximately 40-55).
2.Collared Doves (approximately 18-22)
3. Sparrows (approximately 12-18)
4.Wood Pigeons (approximately 8-11)
5. Dunnocks (approximately 5-7)

My area is East Lancashire - semi-rural/suburban
1. House Sparrows (up to 40 at any one time)
2. Starlings (up to 20 at any one time)
3. Black-headed gulls (up to 20 at any one time, but only if I feed them with bread, otherwise none)
4. Feral Pigeons (3 or 4 pairs at any one time)
5. Dunnocks (6 or more - difficult to see under the bushes)
As the gulls only come when I give them bread I am having another turn!
6. Blackbirds (4 to 6 at the moment), jointly with jackdaws (3 pairs at least)

I just can't get my head around the sparrows being on the red list. They seem to be in abundance here. I was just wandering if it's an area or habitat thing.
Urban, Somerset. Currently - in January.
1. Blackbirds (up to 12 at a time)
2. Greenfinches (up to 8)
3. Dunnocks (up to 4)
4. Blackcaps (up to 4)
5. Chaffinches (up to 4)
Oh that's interesting redwing, sparrows aren't in your top 5.

I expect you would if you put some food out on a shed or garage roof or similar. I put bread on my shed roof and within literally seconds the gulls are circling, then one by one they swoop, pick a piece up, and fly off with their treasure. I don't see them before the bread, and have no idea how they manage to see it so quickly.

Blackbirds
Dunock

I too live in the West Midlands and my regulars are:
House Sparrows (over 30, a count can be hard!)
Starlings (the most ever was over 40, but usually 20)
Blackbirds (around 10)
Collared Doves (8 being the most, being a favourite of Ms Sparrowhawk their numbers don't really grow)
Woodpigeons (around 6, crash landing into the garden and clattering about)
We get plenty of birds coming and going, but not always vast numbers - with the exception of the House Sparrows.
So far the majority of us have sparrows in a decent quantity. Why do you think they are on the red list?
My sparrowhawk also takes the collared doves Paul but they just keep coming from somewhere.
At a guess, they're not as strong in population in other counties as they are here. Actually, do they even know why they're in such a decline?
The Collared Doves really aren't lucky here at all, nextdoor's cat got one once and left it near dead on the lawn (I felt awful and kept apologising and telling it was going to be ok!). But the Sparrowhawk usually gets them, only the female - the male has only shown up here 3 times and is a lousy hunter!
Saying that they are a fairly stable population so I don't know where they keep coming from, lol!
