Hi eveyone. I am new to this community but wanted to share my joy at my first sighting of redwings in my garden. They were busy tucking into the small fruits on my neighbours tree. Thank goodness they do little pruning otherwise I may never have had these lovely visitors. There is so much snow on the ground still.
Can they be encouraged to feed from the ground or do they stay predominantly in the trees and bushes?
Di
Hi Di, welcome to the forum.
Excellent news and congratulations on you Redwings.
They often feed on the ground, in loose flocks, finding worms, insects and seeds when the weather permits.
( They also will gather in flocks in tree's & shrubs with berries. )
In hard weather, they will visit gardens for chopped up apples and berries. If you are suffering from harsh weather, then I would encourage you to chop up some apples and see if they return.

I second what Buzzard has said {smile}
Put out extra chopped apples in my garden this morning
Love to see members of the Thrush family popping in for a piece of fruit anytime they feel like it

Hello Di. As you see you get very good, friendly and prompt advice on here.
Hello Di and welcome. I recently saw my first two redwings and I was over the moon about it. They are lovely birds, aren't they?
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
I have seen a big flock of Redwings today and was very happy to see them, never seen them around here. Then later today I saw a huge flock of Fieldfares too! I had never seen a Fieldfare before so was a fantastic day today for birdwatching.

Hi Tuppence and welcome to the forum. I am sure you will enjoy it here.
Welcome to the forums Di :o)
I'm really enjoying hearing about all these redwing sightings - then again I bet everyone is enjoying seeing them!
I too would say to put some soaked sultanas out and some chopped up apples, this may well encourage them into your garden (albeit somewhat briefly). And if it doesn't it sure will please any neighbourhood blackbirds :o)
