I live on the Isle of Wight and have been putting food out for birds in my garden for years. Yesterday I was visited by about 15 fieldfare which took soft fruit and suet-feed. I've never seen any before. Is this a result of the bad weather driving them further south?

Welcome to the forum Verne. Yes, birds will eat bananas, but you must peel them first!!!! LOL

we have a flock feeding on our 'false cherry' tree which is laden with berries - at the moment .

We live in South Dorset and have had a lone Fieldfayre in our garden for a couple of days now. It is pecking at itself on the windows of the cars, a bit lonssome maybe? and tucking into apples left out for the birds. Not seen it at the fat balls yet!

How do redwings and fieldfares differ in appearance. I saw lots of what I thought were redwing in my garden yesterday and today but then I saw a photo of a fieldfare and I'm not sure now. Do they come in to the garden together?
The main difference is that the fieldfare is larger, has a grey head and rump and brown wings and speckled chest, the redwing is brown with a speckled chest, a cream 'eyebrow' and a red patch under each wing.

Hi i live in Devizes in Wiltshire and was very excited to see the arrival of a fieldfare in my garden :) Im not too sure the other birds were too pleased to see him/her. He/she seems to have taken possesion of the bird table probably because iv been putting suet and a mixture of fruit and seeds out. I thought the fieldfare was quite amusing at first especially to watch. But, this morning i noticed his bossiness is getting a bit too much for my regulars. I had to resort to increasing the layout of the food in various places so the other birds could get a look in.
Ive noticed the snowy weather is certainly bringing different variety of birds into feed. Excitingly today i saw, a thrush, jay, woodpecker as well as the fieldfare and all my other regulars in the garden and all in one day. It must be there equivelant of going to the pub! LOL
