I live on the Isle of Wight and have been putting food out for birds in my garden for years. Yesterday I was visited by about 15 fieldfare which took soft fruit and suet-feed. I've never seen any before. Is this a result of the bad weather driving them further south?

Hi Joanne,
Welcome to the forums, the blackbirds will be agressive as they will take all his food lol, i would scatter smaller pieces of fruits, like apples around so the blackbirds get a fair chance of the foods . Its dog eat dog out there atm for the birds.

If it aint broken, dont fix it !.... all good things come to those who wait !
Sharing your excitement! I've just seen 2 fieldfares in my back garden and I'm in Northwest England. Was amazed, but googled images to check and they were definitely fieldfares. We've had lots of snow & permanent freezing temperatures since Tuesday, but they appeared to be after water, rather than food. One was sat on the birdbath right outside my livingroom window for some time, gave me chance to have a really good look; beautiful :O)

Hi Helhfg and welcome to the forum.
I am also in NW England but no fieldfares in my garden. I live in hope!
enjoying our first fieldfare this winter,a lovely plump dominant male-he chases off any other thrush,s!.....hes eating the few rotten apples we have left on our tree, seems to tolerate robins and blue tits.really pleased to see such a stunning bird and we have named him jimmy.
Hello Camanda and Helhfj, so glad you are seeing fieldfare. Enjoy the forum.
I must have only the aggresive of Fieldfares here!, you mention the Blackbirds in your garden were warning the fieldfares off but it's the opposite here! these have been aggresive with the smaller birds too, Perhaps it's because I put out plenty of food for them i.e seed and nut's,chopped apple- as the bird bath is frozen up but blackbirds do love apple and it seems fieldfare's do too!

The excitement is growing - this afternoon no fewer than four fieldfares perched on our cherry tree - but that blackbird scared all but one away. That one remaining was very persistent, but the blackbird was more so, and so the last fieldfare eventually followed his mates!
I live in a Cambridgeshire village and today at one point had about 25 fieldfare around my cherry tree picking the fruit and eating the apples I put out for the blackbirds. I was thrilled. I will put more apples out tomorrow . I have bananas in my friut bowl. I wonder if they will eat them too?
