Hi
We are due to have an extension built and I have just spotted a robin's nest with 3 eggs in an area that will be demolished.
I have read that it could be up to 28 days before they hatch and fledge but how long after that should I wait before it is safe to move the nest to ensure they are no longer using it?
Many thanks.
Julie
Hello Julie, and welcome to the forum from me in Lancashire.
I'm afraid you can't move the nest until all the chicks have fledged and left. This would be illegal. Once every chick has gone you can safely move it.
Cheers, Linda.

Hi Linda,
Thanks for the response. I am planning to delay the build until they have left the nest, do you know roughly how long it takes before they have finished with the nest? Once they start leaving the nest about 14 days after hatching should I allow another week or longer before starting building to be on the safe side? Just want a rough timeline for the buliders!
Cheers,
the book says 12-14 days incubation and same for fledging,

Once they have all left you should be safe, so at least a month from now. However, they may not have finished laying yet. They usually lay 4 to 6 eggs.
It's going to be a long delay to start that phase of renovation I'm sorry to say. I know it can be difficult to get a builder when you need them, so for further info so you can liaise with the builder to book them in later in the year, have a look at "Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981".

That I understand, and I guessed there may be necessary outstanding work to be undertaken, that's why I shared the link of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 with you.
There is often provision in these acts for urgent situations, which may help you.
