Are there any large starling roosts happening around the Bedford/Cambridge area?
we went to Fen Drayton - it was great thank you Neil!
Fen Drayton near to St Ives, Cambs is on my to do list this winter to, numbers should continue to build at most roost sites up until christmas time and begin to dimish therefater as the birds disperse back to breeding areas.
Call Fen Drayton Lakes on 01954 233260 for current numbers..
Also, In both 2007/08 there were reports of a large starling roost near to Northampton Town FC. Storton's Gravel Pits LNR managed by BPCN Wildlife Trust has thousands of roosting starlings in the reedbeds - umbrellas and hats are advisable if going for the full sky-filling experience! The roost is easily viewable from St James relief road, linking Sixfields Stadium (home to Northampton Town FC) to the Ross Road and St James Mill Road industrial estates, close to Franklins Gardens (home to Northampton Saints RFC). The road passes immediately along the north and eastern edges of the reedbed where the starlings roost.
Email BPCN wildlife trust on northamptonshire@wildlifebcnp.org or call on Tel: 01604-405285 to find out numbers..
Not sure how far you want to travel but there are currently 7-8000 @ Holme NR in Norfolk - quite a spectacle even during the day
thank you for your great reply - we already turned up at Fen Drayton - I put a video on facebook if you go and have a look!
