Listening to a local Ranger on the radio he said Wood pigeons would soon be moving on, also saying that there has not been any research as to were they go. Does anybody have any idea were they might go? Having said that I had a pair hang around all last winter.
I hope someone does do some research on them.
Hi Waxwing - the furthest my wood pigeons go is from my garden to my neighbours garden! We have 3 who have been with us all year round and each has its night roost in nearby trees - the fatest one roosts in a tree in our garden just feet away from a source of sunflower heads which he reaches by perching in a water bowl. Wood Pigeons have always been plentiful all year round as far as I can remember so would love to know more - will have to get searching!
Waxwing, that really is news to me. I have never been aware of them ever leaving, but maybe I don't watch them closely enough.

I was going to say that!!!
Squirrel
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Hi Lucybob, I think we must be feeding them to much, But I have heard this before that they do move on I to will have to do some researching also.
Sorry about the wait, the computer won't send any messages. I think it might be down to the food supply whether they stay or go.
Thanks for your help,I will look further into this its interesting, mind you Racing Pigeons will fly 1000 miles to get home.
True - my w.p.'s don't look that streamlined how about yours Squirrel?
Hi Lucy
I am thinking that too. Food is their love and they like to be next to it all most of the times. My Woodies just like to sit around all day and do nothing at all - and one sits right in the bird bath cooling off.
Like many bird species some will migrate and some stay.
I know with Blackbirds you can end up with migatory birds in your garden without you even knowing about it, and they disappear without you knowing it.
Interesting to see where the Woodies go and if it is Spain well they have my vote any day.
Regards
Kathy and Dave

Lucy, I think you've hit the nail on the head as regards movement of WPs! There certainly are huge flocks out in the fields currently, maybe boosted by 'foreigners', as with many other species. I'm pretty sure that the 'residential' ones that come to the gardens stay put as they've no need to move around looking for food supplies! That's my theory anyhow! ;-)
