All the blackbirds in my neighborhood have disappeared. where have they gone?

Birds Rule

  • Could be that they have gone out to the fields & hedgerows for the berries? Oh & welcome to the forum!!

  • Blackbirds tend to be solitary birds. Small feeding and roosting groups sometimes form at good sites, but there is no proper social interaction.

A male blackbird establishes a territory during his first year, and holds it throughout his life. He defends the territory against other males, while his mate is territorial against females only. Territory boundaries break down when the last broods have fledged and adults moult. During this period during late summer and early autumn, territorial drive is low, and many birds will feed outside their territories at abundant food sources. Territories are re-established in the late autumn.

Also you should also check out the Wildlife enquiries blog which offers info on the other factors which can cause an apparent disappearance of birds.

  • This sounds like my old blackbirds - every blackbird in the area mysteriously vanished...until I went out with my dog along a path through the golf course and there were LOADS of blackbirds there taking advantage of a feast of berries (it was a hawthorn hedgerow with bramble and various other fruiting shrubs).  Perhaps your blackbirds have found a similar bounty?  Either that or they are hiding away as they go through the moult.

  • I had noticed that my blackbirds had gone too, but just this morning one appeared in the garden again, as KatTai wrote probably off into the hedgerows there are plenty of berries out there this year.
