Hi, can anyone advise me as to whether birds only use bird boxes that are on a wall/fence etc? I've just been given a very pretty bird box from Austria and was thinking about making it free-standing by attaching it to a tall wooden pole (like a bird table pole) and securely putting it amongst my shrubs, but I am wondering, with it being put in more of an open area, if birds would use it to nest in or not.
It depends on what species you intend to attract? Rather than go on about it here i have attached a very useful information leaflet for you which offers information what species you can expect to attract, siting the box and maintenance. Hope this helps!

Thanks for replying so quickly Lloyd. Sorry, I should have stated which kind of box it is (It's my first ever post!!) It's a small round hole so will be for tits, sparrows etc. The info sheet you sent is a great help, it does seem to suggest wall/tree fixings, so maybe I should play safe and do this. Thanks again!
