Hello everyone; first time here.

We have a magpie walking around our apartment for at least 3 weeks now if not longer. He has no wings on either side possibly from a fox or cat I’m guessing. He’s managed to last all this time and even has magpie friends that pop to visit him.

My question is, will his wings grow back over time? We’ve grown quite fond of him and I’m concerned that he’s vulnerable wandering about.

  • If he has no wing either side it's more likely a congenital defect as birds are unlikely to survive a bi-lateral amputation by a predator - there would be extensive muscle damage.  If it's just de-feathered and the frame is still there then there is a chance they might grow back depending on the cause.   Yes he will be vulnerable but if he has shrubbery etc to hide under there is a chance of some survival - sorry it's a really hard one to answer.

  • That’s really helpful thank you. I’d say it’s just de feathered as the main part of wing is still present it’s just the ends that are missing.

How long would it take for them to grow back?
