Hello,
We have had house martins building a nest in our shed outside over the last 2 days, but after we were in the garden today they seemed to have stopped building--- do they not stick around if the there is activity going on or a bit of noise?? We have 2 small children, but are hoping they haven't cleared off for good?

If it's inside the shed, that'd most likely be swallows.
Assuming you are in UK, the weather will have dampened nest building potentially. Always the chance an adult has been predated. There do seem to be an increased amount of predators around this year here. But, they could be struggling to find enough food for themselves due to the cool/cold, wet start to July.....and the long term reduction in insects.
