We have a strange pigeon type bird in our garden often, It is the same size as a Wood Pigeon but has the looks of a Ring Dove. When it flies it has a white bar on each wing which does not show when on the ground. Its head looks like a Ring Dove and its beak is different to a wood pigeon
Which country are you posting from? In UK, there is a large population of homing, racing and feral pigeons. It's likely to be that if UK. Any leg ring?
Hi. I am in the UK , Oxfordshire. I am familiar with feral pigeons but the appearance of this bird does not fit the feral pigeons make up. There is no leg ring. To me it looks like a strange Ring Dove but the size of a Wood Pigeon. Its beak is different from a Woodie. Thanks for your reply..
I am guessing you mean collared dove? Definitely worth a photo to give a definitive i.d. Pigeons do vary in size to some extent.
Yes Collard Dove. I will try to get a photo, thanks
It's possible that this is a juvenile woodpigeon. They lack the white neck bars and yellowish beaks of the adults.
Thanks Cris. You might be right. This looks very similar except for the beak which appears black plus the wing bars are hidden when on the ground feeding at my bird table. Overall I think you suggestion is correct..
Here is one of "our" young Woodpigeons from the beginning of April - when first seen at a distance I thought perhaps it was a Collared Dove but on closer inspection realised it's a Woodpigeon. We had 3 young ones and I later found out that they breed all year round, unlike so many of our other garden birds.
We currently have Collared Doves nesting in our front garden so hoping to see the young birds soon - I believe they have hatched but we're trying not to disturb them (difficult when they are opposite our front door).
