Hi, I need some advice on possibly relocating a cardinal nest in our shed. Today we found a cardinal nest in our storage shed, and I need to know if it would be possible to move it without disturbing it our causing the babies to die. The eggs have already hatched, and I would leave it alone, however we had a robin build a nest in the same spot last year. When the robins went to leave the nest, the babies could not escape and unfortunately passed in the shed. I am hoping to avoid this with the cardinals. Is there anything I can do to help them? Can they be moved at this point? Any advice is much appreciated.
Hi
This is predominantly a UK site, so limited knowledge of US laws. In the UK it's illegal to interfere with a nest once it has started being built, except in certain circumstances. General advice would be to leave alone, especially as they have hatched
IMO, the shed was open long enough for both species to get in and build a nest and incubate, then feed chicks in the robin's case. Therefore, I can't see why cardinal youngsters will get stuck unless the shed is all closed up at fledge time.
