A visitor brought a fledgling bird, probably chaffinch to the gate at Kew Gardens where I was working. It was doing short flights inside the ticket booth and ably hopped onto my fingertips gripping them firmly. At the end of my shift I returned it to the area of woods where it had been found and put it in a branch fork and it gripped firmly onto the branch. Would it have been better to have put it on the ground?
