Baby pigeons abandoned

Hi there!I live in Cambridge. We have a family of woodpigeons on the top of a garden tree.I don't know how old the babies are, could be a week. This morning I saw the mother feeding one of them but now it's evening and there is no adult in the tree. I saw two adult pigeons flying away from the nest. There were loud voices in our garden but noise hadn't scared them off thus far. Might the parents have abandoned the nest?Or just leaving the babies alone for some time? Can they survive the night?

When do I intervene?

  • Sorry that no-one has answered yet Nafsika, general advice is not to interfere with a nest, is actually against the law! Do hope that the parents have returned to see to their chicks by now, all you can do is to watch from a safe distance for fear of scaring them away! Woodpigeon chicks need to be reared by parents due to the specialist way they feed their young, a re-habber might be able to manage but many places are not taking in wild birds due to the prevalence of avian flu! I realise that it's extremely difficult to watch a nest that fails but it's nature in the raw!

You could try to find a rescue centre near you to ring for further advice ... directory.helpwildlife.co.uk/
