I have a neighbour with very long and high hedges that is crammed every year with nesting birds but he has his hedges cut by professionals with two stroke machines in June or July, I have broached the subject with them but got a very defensive response. I have written this poem to try and get the message out there that the Spring does not end in May for nesting birds and I have been shocked by how many people are unaware of this. Please share this poem to help get the message out there that birds nest right through to August. Thanks

Welcome to my garden, said those at 53
We’ve laid on treats and nesting homes especially for thee
Fat balls in abundance, seeds of every sort
And plentiful green hedges, for you to flirt and court
Oh beautiful birds do come and stay,
You bring such happiness every day
Your songs are music to my ear
Come to my garden, you have nothing to fear.
Each year we are treated to a cacophony of song
Our garden is a paradise, what could possibly go wrong?
Build your nests in our hedges to raise each chick
You are completely protected as our hedges are thick.
But beware dear birds, this one thing you should know
That when my hedges sprout and grow
The machines will come to scare you away
And you won’t return cos the noise lasts all day
Your abandoned chicks will flee their nest
Making them pray for cats and the rest
Those too young to run or fly
Will simply stay and starve and die.
You gave us so much pleasure but don’t you see
Neat hedges are very important to me
More important than your nesting family.
