Hi all I've been feeding garden birds since I moved here 10 years ago and have many regulars. My plan to stay for the rest of my days unfortunately has changed. I'm very concerned about how the birds here will survive. I have two neighbours and neither feed them. I want to do what's going to give them a better chance to survive. I'm moving in February. Shall I start reducing their food weekly now? Or feed them the current amount to help get them through the winter then reduce? Or is there a better way? Thanks in advance
Sorry no one has replied. I personally don't feed birds anything other than niger. Re your situation, if it were me, I'd keep going but reduce amount gradually, so the birds thin out. As you'll know Feb and arguably March are the worst months re natural food shortages. Depends a bit on weather of course, but probably best not to keep feeding up til then. I suppose it's poss your replacement(s) might feed birds, but ultimately, if birds can't survive on their own, their population is unsustainable. Gradually reducing reliance is best IMO.
