Would a buzzard prey on a pet cat?

I have had two buzzards attacking and killing birds in my garden and my neighbours garden over the past two weeks. Would they attack my pet cat? I have also have a kestrel hunting in my garden, this is the first time I have seen them hunting in my area. Can I do anything to put them off from attacking birds in my garden?

  • With the part about Birds of prey And cats. if anything they don’t tend to  take much notice of them there more concerned about doing there thing like hunting or feeding young if they have any young to feed. The birds of prey usually have there eyes on there prey rather than on things like dogs and cats. If anything they would probably see cats as a threat or a distraction than anything you dont have to worry about them harming your cat.

  • As Robbo says your culprit is much more likely to be a Sparrowhawk than a Buzzard or Kestrel I have spent over 50years watching the behaviour of Common Buzzard , Kestrel and other birds of prey and have never come across this type of hunting. In general Buzzards like some space to hunt in and their diet varies from earthworms up to Rabbit size mammals but they go for the sick or less mobile ones first as easy pickings. I think your cat is quite safe if it is Sparrowhawks hunting in your garden, I don't recall hearing of one seriously attacking a cat. As already said your cat will probably kill more birds than the Hawk it is in their nature and hard to prevent.

  • That and with the birds of prey landing. I have a Buzzard locally that sours in circles rideing the thermals and will very occasionally pass over and will sometimes get pestered by gulls. Even when not pestered it just passes over. Iv been in the UK my whole life and iv never seen or heard of one land in someone’s garden. Buzzards arnt really garden birds there habitat tends to be near or in Woodland, and places with wide open fields or meadows. Kestrels arnt really much of a Garden bird either they tend to hunt on things like commons,  open fields and sometimes motorways so gardens arnt really there thing either. As the others said it’s probably Sparrowhawks rather than a Buzzard and Kestrel. There more likely to land in Gardens. Also Kestrels arnt medium to large birds of prey and tend to be smaller than other birds of prey sometimes described as almost pigeon sized

  • Hi

the only raptor I heard of attacking cats was an escaped vulture a few decades ago

For advice about Birding, Identification, field guides,  binoculars, scopes, tripods,  etc - put 'Birding Tips'   into the search box

  • Then I think it’s a good job it’s not a very common ocurance to get vultures  in our gardens cause otherwise I think almost  any one in the uk who have cats  would complain about it

  • An escaped Eagle Owl from Harewood Bird gardens neat Leeds caused havoc among pets in the local village many years ago and was supposed to have picked up someone's cat. It did get reported in the regional paper but these things get blown out of proportion over time and end up in local folklore.

  • I don’t mean to be a pain or anything but I don’t think mentioning ocurances people know of of any birds of prey attacking cats is going to reassure the poster the Sparrowhawk isn’t likely to harm there cat
