I think I have found a Blackbird nest, but it might be abandoned?

Hello,

I think I have found a blackbirds nest under a hitch cover on my horse trailer. It is low to the ground and under cover. When I found it there were no birds in sight, just two blue with brown flecks/speckled eggs in the nest. We haven't seen any evidence of mum but we think dad blackbird is around. I dont want to move the trailer and disrupt the nest, but I am meant to be using it tomorrow. do you think the nest has been abandoned as the mum wasnt sitting on the eggs when we found them?or do they go back and forth whilst waiting for them to hatch?

    Hi Naomi

This is a tricky one. It is actually illegal to interfere with a nest if the bird is sitting on eggs. (Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981) It is more than likely that the birds are sitting on your nest, as they do leave the nest to feed.

Very difficult if you need to use it tomorrow.

I don't feel qualified to give you advice apart from pointing out the law. I hope someone else will do that on this forum.

    Best wishes
